I think its a great idea !
As a nation we waste so much food
....this becomes so clear amongst the muslims in the month of Ramadan.
........Time n time again I have seen so many dishes prepared for the Iftr and no one eats it so it goes to the bin :(
...... Hey another idea also with the amount f obesty thats in our society this could be a great way to help as well........
I watched a program where a woman lost x amount of kilos by eating just within the voundaries of the circle on her plate.... she now takes the plate with her everywhere she goes...
OOOOOOOPS Gone off topic...
Yeah ! I think it would make for a great compaign.
Whos in for it ?
I am :D
:wa:
PS
if i put too little, that's al what i'll end up be eating.
U can always go back for more ;)

Assalam alaikum,
interesting!
I will try doing that inshallah
My mother bred chickens and my dad bred cats. So when food is left over we usually give it to the chickens and in turn they give us fresh eggs! And when we have meats left over, the cats get them and they gaurd our garden for us from foreigners.. good idea ay? i think it works well subhan allah! The bin never gets food, forunately, alhamdulilah
You should all try doing that too.. an add on to the campaign. what thinks you?

Waste Not - Want Not!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
by Mutmainaa
www.geocities.com/mutmainaa
15% of the world has more than enough to eat, only 60% of the world's people have just enough to eat, and 25% of the people in the world do not have enough to eat.
20 million people die annually in the world because of hunger and its effects.
It is estimated that one billion people in the world suffer from hunger and malnutrition, and Three-fourths of the deaths are children under the age of five.
According to statistics in the US, 14 million tons of food scraps were generated in 1995.
Think it or not, Food is a rich resource, and too often taken for granted. It is a great blessing of Allah, Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. It is only from the Great Mery of our Ever-Merciful Lord than we are able to open a fridge, and see it filled with food to eat.
With the abundance of food available, though, especially in the west with all the food mountains (stored surplus foods); it is only too easy to waste this precious gift. Islam places great emphasis on making good use of our resources, and not wasting excessively.
Allah, Subhanahu wa Ta'ala commands us not to waste by excess;
"It is He Who produceth gardens, with trellises and without, and dates, and tilth with produce of all kinds, and olives and pomegranates, similar (in kind) and different (in variety): eat of their fruit in their season, but render the dues that are proper on the day that the harvest is gathered. But waste not by excess: for God loveth not the wasters."
[surah al An'am; 6: 141]
Ibn Kathir mentions that this ayat means do not waste in eating because this spoils the mind and the body.
The Prophet said; Eat, drink and clothe yourselves without extravagance or arrogance
[sahih al-Bukhari]
We shall all be accountable for everything that we do; including what we have eaten, and what we have wasted. Extravagance in all things is something that is blameworthy, and something that we should be conscious of.
Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala says;
"and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allah) likes not those who waste by extravagance"
[surah al-Ar'af; 7:31]
And the Prophet said:
"The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach; for the son of Adam a few mouthfuls are sufficient to keep his back straight. If you must fill it, then one-third for food, one-third for drink and one-third for air."
[at-Tirmidhi, 2380, 1939, ibn Majah, 3349]
Umar (radiAllahu anhu) said:
By Allah, if I wanted I could wear the finest clothes among you, and eat the best food, and have the most luxurious life. But I heard that Allah will condemned people for some of their actions and said:
"You received your good things in the life of the world, and you took your pleasure therein. Now this Day you shall be recompensed with a torment of humiliation, because you were arrogant in the land without a right, and because you used to rebel against Allah’s Command (disobey Allah)"
[surah al-Ahqaf; 46:20]
From heaping mounds of pasta to pizzas and all-you-can-eat buffets, the prevailing philosophy (in the Western, Capitalist world) generally appears to be: Load up the platters. The more food the better.
The common restaurant (and sadly home) attitude, with such abundances in food seems to be: Never mind if you can't clean your plate. Wasting food is "the" way - there's more where that came from. "Waste not, want not" is meant for people in other, less fortunate countries and cultures.
Recent studies on obesity point an accusing finger at large portions in foods as one of the culprits responsible for the world's expanding waistlines. Portions and amounts that individuals not only don't need, but that are potentially dangerous for their health.
Its a depressing fact to realise JUST how much the world's precious resources are abused and wasted to such an excess, and how many people in the dunya are suffering because of a lack of food.
Sufyan al-Thawri (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
If you want your body to be healthy and to sleep less, then eat less.
Al-Hakim narrated that Abu Juhayfah (RadiAllahu anhu) said:
The Messenger of Allah said:
"The more people eat their fill in this world, the more hungry they will be on the Day of Resurrection."
Below are a list of options one may take in order to try and not to be extrvagant and waste food unnecessarily:
Eat less We are aware of the hadith of the Prophet of filling our stomachs with 1/3 of food and 1/3 of water.
Eat less portions Instead of piling your plate with food, pour in a little, and complete that before ending up with left-overs later on. Once the food is dumped in the dust-bin (garbage), then it is lost forever.
Donate food Inevitablely, especially in the Western world, food is left over. If not from Eid, then from Dinners and masjid functions and so on. If you cannot keep whatever is left over for too long, then why not try donating food discards to food banks, soup kitchens and shelters. It is a beautiful and easy way for communities to divert food discards, and insha'Allah help your local community.
In the Hereafter, charity could be the reason for protecting oneself from Hell-Fire even if it was as small as a piece of date! Remember the hadith, where Muhammad said; "There will be none among you but will be talked to by Allah on the Day of Resurrection, without there being an interpreter between him and Allah. He will look and see nothing ahead of him, and then he will look (again) in front of him, and (only) the Hell Fire will confront him. So, whoever among you can save himself from the Fire, should do so even with one half of a date (ie. if all what you can give as charity is one half of a date)
Indeed, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala has praised those who make a constant right in their wealth for the poor and has promised them multiplied rewards for their charity. He, Subhanahu wa ta'ala said,
"Who is he that will loan to Allah a beautiful loan which Allah will double unto his credit and multiply it many times?"
[surah al-Baqarah; 245]
Feed animals Another traditional way to divert food waste is to feed it to livestock, or birds.
There are many birds, alhamdulilah, and they can easily eat bits of bread, and nuts which otherwise would be wasted.
Farmers may be able to provide storage containers and low-cost pick-up services for those discards which may be piled up.
Even for animals, waste isnt natural. A waste to one species is food or a resource to another. Subhan'Allah.
Recycle and Compost Composting is a more complicated yet effective food waste reduction process. Discarded food can easily be piled at the back of the graden/yard in containers, together with leaves and cut grass to eventually make compost which is great for gardening and the envioronment.
Cook! Even left-overs can be turned into a new, delicious dish, sometimes even better than the original meal for which it was used for!
Use it for cosmetics Alhamdulilah, many foods are increasingly being used for helping the health and beauty. There are many health benefits from the use of food - including Olives, Honey and Figs.
Thus, many foods which may be rotting away, could rather be used for and on your face as a moisturiser, or exfoliator, cream, and so on.
Organise Organise a food drive (invite muslims and raise awareness) and donate food to a local food bank, shelter or soup kitchens.
Lectures Plan tours of food recovery facilities or arrange for knowledgeable speakers to increase community and ummah awareness of hunger and poverty problems, and what people are doing to address them.

a good way is to break your big meals into small meals. Like, 5 small meals in a day, instead of 3 big meals.
just to add to the suggestions,
Cook in considerable amounts
I think we've got a problem with over cooking.
but guess what.. three days in a row and i've ate it all :D :yay: (what's on my plate that is) :shifty:

Thats probably one of the smartest ways of making sure the food doesnt go to waste.
I have a cat but she's not a fan of arabic food :vsad: she doesnt mind it if it has meat... but most of the time she just digs through the food to get through to the meat and leaves the rest ... i gotta tell my cat about this campaign!

looooool!!!
Sure will  we can add it in our findings!
now we've got two issues here:
* the food in our own plate
* and the food of the family all together
let's not get the both confused (even though they relate)
There's definitely going to be family left over food.. or food that you've always kept in the fridge and every time you look at t you say, haram we'll eat it, we'll eat it.. but then you throw it and never end up eating it really.
Putting the ideas together, what we want to try to do is minimise the family leftovers (the ones i was on about in the fridge) by eating all what's on our plate.
As for the rest, we're give them in sadaqah for the birdies outside :D

You dont have to say no...... just have smaller amounts :D
Remember to keep and 1/3 of ur stomach for food a 1/3 for water and a 1/3 for air.
It is so common when we eat n eat n eat until we cant get up... but this is a no no, not only does it go against the sunnah but it also goes against what your body needs & wants.
be kind to your body, eat wats on ur plate and eat less....
Oh n dont forget to excercise !!
:wa:
Salam sis...
Yes ur right. It's one's lack of self control!!! But inshallah to try n curb my lack of self control i need some sort of motivation, and i've taken steps to achieve just that! Inshallah tomorrow, at 2pm, i have a fitness assessment at a gym. I'll be signing on for six months. So that should gimme some serious motivation n discipline inshallah!

Dangers of Excessive Eating
Eating less also holds some great benefits. Describing these benefits the most eminent scholar of the 20th Century Hazrat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi Sahib (rah) who at the age of 25 became an Alim (scholar). For the aid of the muslim ummah (generation) he began writing Kitabs (islamic books) regarding the muslim law in which he wrote a great number of kitabs which come to a calculation of over 950. Until now these kitabs are flourishing around the whole globe very rapidly. His kitabs can be found in every topic: Fiqh (jurisprudence), Qur'an, T.V, Music, etc. An article had been published in a magazine called 'Al-Mu'min' in which it states that he has scientifically warned:
"Many sins are the consequences of providing excessive nourishment to the stomach, i.e.. Abstain from haram food. Do not become addicted to delicious food. Do not eat excessively. Leave some space in the stomach, i.e.. Do not eat to satiation.
The benefits of eating less are:
1. The heart remains pure. This leads to recognition of the Ni'mat (bounties) of Allah (sw).
2. Love for Allah (sw) develops in the purified heart.
3. Mercy and Tenderness become the attributes of the heart.
4. Pleasure is experienced in Du'aa (supplication) and Zikr (rememberence of Allah)
5. Pride and Rebellion of the Nafs are restraint and eliminated.
6. The difficulty of even a little hunger leads to abstention from sins. The inclination for sins decreases.
7. One stays healthy.
8. One feels less sleepy, and laziness in regard to Tahajjud (a virtuous prayer read between the night and morning) and other acts of Ibaadah (worship) is uprooted.
If the Holy Prophet detested food he would not eat so much to overburden his nature. This is a great basis of health preservation, for when a human being eats what nature abhors, then the human being would be damaged.
Abu-Na'eem has written in Kitabatu-Tib that the Holy Prophet has said that the Al-Mighty Allah has not created any utensil bigger than stomach and that when a person takes meal, he should try to divide the whole thing into three parts. One for food, another for water and the third for breathing.
Eating less keeps one healthy, sharpens memory, reduces hours of sleep, helps smooth breathing and saves one from being sluggish.

Assalam alaikum wr wb,
^^^^^^^^^^^^
A very powerful image indeed!! La hawla wala quwata illa bilahi al3aliyi altheem
here is a suitable relating article:
When A Morsel Of Food Falls
Jaabir Ibn ‘Abdullah (ra - may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (saw - may the peace & blessings of Allah be upon him) said,
“If a morsel belonging to one of you falls down, then let him take it, remove any dirt that is on it, and eat it - and let him not leave it for the shaitaan (devil).”
In another narration of the Hadeeth, the Prophet (saw) said,
“Verily, the shaitaan is present with (each) one of you in all of his affairs; he (shaitaan) is even present with him when he is eating. So if a morsel falls from one of you, then let him remove any dirt that is on it and then eat it, and let him not leave it for the shaitaan. And when he (i.e., one of you) finishes (eating), then let him lick his fingers, for he does not know in which part of his food there is blessings (Barakah.) “ 1.
Let us point out some of the lessons we can learn from this Hadeeth.
First, the shaitaan is ever present with every human being, looking not only for opportunities to inflict harm upon a person, but also for a chance to share with him his food and drink. Second, we should remove any dirt or foreign object that attaches itself to a morsel of food that falls down. Then we should eat it, realizing that we are preventing the shaitaan from eating it. Shaitaan is our enemy, and as such, we should not only protect ourselves from him, but we should also make sure that he does not achieve any benefit through us. Third, the blessings of a meal might be in the portion that falls down on the ground, so we should pick it up and eat it, and not lose out on the chance of eating the particular part of a meal that has blessings in it. Fourth, we must believe, as the Hadeeth informs us, that the shaitaan is always present with us; we cannot and must not, therefore, follow the way those who use their defective minds to reason and interpret, until they end up claiming that it is not possible for shaitaan to be with us at all times. Fifth, we must avoid wasting food as there are many people in the world today who do not have any food to eat, let alone to waste any food that they have.
