BEAUTIFUL BROWS

All praise belongs to Allah. We praise Him and we seek His help. Whosoever Allah guides is the truly guided one and whosoever Allah leaves astray no one can show him guidance. May the best of His peace and blessings be on Muhammad, his family and companions.

Our beloved Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wassallam) said,

"By Him in Whose hands is my life (Allah the Almighty), necessarily you should enjoin good and check evil, or else Allah will certainly send chastisement (punishment) upon you. Otherwise, you will pray but your supplications will not be accepted. "(Tirmidhi)

Shaping the eyebrows by plucking them in order to look beautiful has always been an issue among the females. Here's some valuable information from the Islamic point of view.

Plucking the eyebrows is totally forbidden and is considered to be one of the major sins. Scholars classify sins as major and minor on the fact that if there is any sin which is attached with a curse or being expelled by the mercy of Allah is a major sin.

Abdullah Ibn Masood narrates that

Rasoolullah (sallallahu alayhi wassallam) said,

Allah curses those ladies who practice tattooing and those who get themselves tattooed, and those ladies who get their hair removed from their eyebrows and faces except beard or moustache, and those who make artificial spaces between their teeth for beautification, whereby they change Allah's creation."

His saying reached a lady from Banu Asad who came to him and said, "I have come to know that you have cursed such-and-such ladies?"

He replied "Why should I not curse those whom Rasoolullah has cursed and who are (cursed) in Allah's book." the lady said, I have read the whole Quran but I didn't find in it what you said."

He said," Verily if you have read it (i.e. the Quran) you must have found it. Didn't you read,

"And whatsoever the Messenger gives you take it and whatsoever he forbids, abstain (from it)." (59:7)

She replied," Yes I did.", he said, "verily Allah's Messenger forbade such things". She said, "But i see your wife doing these things? He said, "Go and watch her". She went and watched her but could not see anything in support of her statement. On that he said, "If my wife was as you thought, I would not keep her in my company"(i.e . I would divorce her).

Sahih Bukhari, Vol.6, hadith No.408)

Also in Surah Nisa :

"Allah cursed him (iblees) and he said:' I will take an appointed portion of your slaves.Verily, I shall mislead them and surely I shall give them long hopes, and certainly,I shall order them to slit the ears of cattle, and shall order them to change (alter) the creation of Allah.'And whoever takes shaytan as a wali instead of Allah ,has surely suffered a manifest loss." (4:119)

Imam Al Qurtubi and other interpretators of the Quran say that changing the creation of Allah means

An Nams or plucking the eyebrows..

Some sisters protest that shaping the eyebrows is allowed if it's done to please their spouses.

It is important to note here, that if it was allowed, the hadeeth would have mentioned it. But it totally forbids and the reason is obvious too....it is changing the creation of Allah!

This rule applies to cosmetic surgery too i.e. making the nose thinner, the lips thicker, etc.

Changing the creation of Allah on any body part is forbidden & should be refrained from.

Remember & Ponder:

*The pleasure of forbidden actions is followed by regret, loss and punishment in this world and the Hereafter.

*Worshipping Allah, trying to please Him is our main goal in life.

*Real beauty is achieved by loving Allah, fearing Him and following His orders and His Messenger's way of life.

*what is more important? Allah's love and mercy? or this forbidden act which will incur Allah's anger and punishment?

Narrated Abu Hurairah,
Allah's Messenger said,

"All my followers will enter Paradise except those who refuse." They said, O Allah's Messenger! Who will refuse?"

He said, "Whoever obeys me will enter paradise and whoever disobeys me is the one who refuses (to enter it)."

(Sahih Al Bukhari)

Allah's Messenger said (sallallahu alayhi wassallam) said;

"Whoever guides or directs to good, then he gets the same amount of blessing (reward) as the one who does it."

Inshallah this finds you in the best health and Iman.

There has been a previous topic about shaping the eyebrows and also the bleaching of the eyebrows here. (http://www.sydneymuslimyouth.com/smyforum/viewtopic.php?highlight=brows&t=3132)

You may like to read through that and also I came across this..

RE: Removing hair inbetween the eyebrows:

....As for removing the hair from between the eyebrows, it is lawful, because it is not part of the eyebrows. But as for plucking the eyebrows, it is forbidden and not permissible in Islam, according to the Hadith: 'May Allah's curse be inflicted upon women who pluck their eyebrows, and women hired to do this.'

What is prohibited is an-Nams, which denotes removing the hair of the eyebrows by plucking in order to make it thin. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have cursed both women who do the plucking and those who seek to have it done. (Reported by Abu Dawud)"

Question:

Dear scholars, As-Salamu `alaykum. I know that plucking the eyebrows is haram. However, if my eyebrows are very thick and unwieldy, can I do light shaping to straighten them out? Jazakum Allah khayran.

Answer:

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear sister in Islam, we would like to thank you for the great confidence you place in us and your apparent fear of contradicting Allah’s laws. We implore Allah Almighty to help us serve His cause and render our work for His Sake.

As regards your question, we’d like to state that Allah wants us to look neat and tidy, and by trying to appear neat and tidy we are not distorting Allah’s creation, rather we are only enhancing it. Therefore, if your eyebrows are unusually thick or unwieldy then you can straighten them out.

Elaborating on this, we'd like to cite for you the following Fatwa issued by Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, who states:

“The word used in the Hadith is nams in Arabic, which means plucking the eyebrows. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) considered plucking as distorting the creation of Allah. This was the practice resorted to by prostitutes in the time of pre-Islamic jahiliyya (ignorance) and it is still used by women of loose morals.

However, scholars who have studied the issue in detail have concluded that if a person’s eyebrows are unusually thick or unwieldy, then he or she can straighten them out. This is not considered nams or plucking. Allah wants us to look neat and tidy, and by trying to appear neat and tidy we are not distorting Allah’s creation, rather we are only enhancing it.”

Dr. Muhammad Bakr Isma`il, Professor of the Exegesis of the Qur'an at Al-Azhar University, adds:

“It is known that plucking eyebrows is forbidden. However, some jurists permit light shaping of eyebrows if they are thick and hairy in a way that they harm the eye or appear so wide and thus displease the husband. If it pleases the husband that they are shaped lightly, there is nothing wrong in doing this just to please the husband. As for extreme shaping or plucking, it is not permitted.”

Inshallah these help !

NOTE: I would also just like to add that these rulings are also applicable to brothers as is stated by Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid

Question:

Is it permissible for men to trim the eyebrows to make them look tidy (i.e. to make them look presentable - not shaping them to make them look fashionable!) ?

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

It is forbidden for men to pluck their eyebrows. (al-Mawsoo’ah al-Fiqhiyyah, part 14, Tanammus)

It is not permissible for men, just as it is not permissible for women, to trim their eyebrows. Islam forbids plucking even one hair, and trimming could affect every hair, which is worse. (This was the fatwa of our shaykh, Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz, when he was asked this question verbally).

But if the eyebrows are causing harm, such as falling over the eyes and preventing one from seeing properly, they may be trimmed as much as needed to remove the problem. (From a discussion of the matter with Shaykh ‘Abd-‘Allaah ibn Qa’ood).

And Allaah knows best.
