As-Salam Alaikom Brothers and Sisters,

Im a revert and I am also a new member of this forum. I am quite eager to learn more about Islam. I have been muslim for nearly two years now. I wear Hijab and attend Arabic and din lessons, yet there are still many facets of Islam to explore, this is why I am seeking the help of my fellow muslim brothers and sisters.

:help:

I love listening to Nasheeds, I find them very motivational and moving. However, I am aware that it is Haram to listen to music. There is some controversy around this issue and many different opinions tend to leave me confused. Some Nasheeds do have percussion instruments which provide a background for the vocals. Is this sincerly Haram?

Also, I find that many people are hypocritical about reverts. Some people dont think that reverts take Islam seriously. I would like to say to those people out there that reversion is a gift. Allah (watta'ala) chose to allow us, out of all the Kufoor to be not of the "deaf, dumb and blind" and to be part of the true religion. If we were not to take Islam serious do you think that Allah (watta'ala) would have allowed for us to embrace Islam?

Praise be to Allah (watta'ala)

Salam

Assalamualaikum sister, great first post i wish my intro raised as many points lol. Thanks for coming to smy!

Unfortunately your right, for some reason or another some muslims tend to look down upon reverts, yet more often than not, the reverts are far more practicing than those who did not revert. My advise is simply focus on the truth of Islam, and remember that all religions have their black sheeps. When a believer is slated by another believer - you attain their good deeds and you are given blessings. You should smile at them instead of being upset since you are the real winner in the situation.

As for nasheeds your right theres a difference of opinion amongst scholars. The majority would agree that musical instruments are haram.

The evidence ive seen so far stating that music is permissible - simply substitute the term music with singing/poetry. Singing in itself is not haram.

The most viable source of evidence besides the Quranic verse indicating about false talks (31:6) would be that of Bukhari -

The Messenger (SAW) said: "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful...etc etc."(Bukhari Volume 7, Book 69, Number 494)

I believe firmly this is the most authentic narration - and the scholars agree that it is. It implies that muslims will think the above things are lawful(halal) ..indicating that in reality it is unlawful (haram).

Hope that makes it clearer inshallah
