Assalaam Wa Alaikum brothers and sisters,

I would just like some advice on a certain issue. I am currently in my final year of high school, doing my HSC. The teachers at school always stresses how important exercise is and how you must combine it with your study. I found out through a cousin of mine that there is an all-girls' tae kwon do club in lakemba. It's only once a week, on a saturday which is good because it's not on a school day and it will only take up 2 hours of my time (20 minutes each way + 1 hour session)

I asked my father, at first he said no and then he realised it's my only time for exercise so he said yes. I asked my mother, she straightaway, flat-out said no, she wants me to concentrate on my HSC then I can do whatever I want next year. My father discussed with her and they both ended up saying no.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate my parents but they come from a culture where studying is pressured and is a high priority. But they fail to realise that we live in a western society and that exercise will help me relax and ease my mind. It will only take 2 hours off my time per week and I've been noticing some weight gain. Whever I eat a nutella sandwich, my mother always says to me not to eat too much otherwise I'll get fat but to remain slim you also need exercise.

I've accepted their decision but I can't get over the fact that I cannot exercise.

Thank you, Wasalaam

Dear guest, Assalaam Wa Alaikum

thank you very very much for your reply. I know you're not calling me fat  but I have gained some weight. The problem is I cannot convince my parents. They come from a culture where studying is first priority and nothing else (except of course commitment to Islam), I am currently going to a tutoring college which I first attended today and they gave out a booklet which says at the back "healthy mind = healthy body", Insha'Allah if I show them this small paragraph then they will change their minds.

Thank you very much for the reply and the good luck, May Allah (SWT) bless you for your advice :)

Asalamou Alaicom wr wb

Insha Allah you ll are in the best of health and iman

(except of course commitment to Islam),

That's great sister, then why don't you convience them in an islamic approach. The prophet peace be upon him tells us to take care of our health, he salalahou alaihi wasalam used to also exersize and be fit..

If we are not healthy, we become lazy, and if we are lazy, our duties to Islam won't be fulfilled properly, neither our dauly life occurances such as studying.

If i get a hang of ahadiths regarding this matter, i'll send them in insha allah

Waalaikum Assalam Kulazzi,

your teachers at school are right in saying that exercise is important.

Exercise and sports enhances your physical and mental wellbeing. That is, exercise keeps you fit and healthy, but it also reduces stress and tension and increases concentration. You will find that you can concentrate better on your studies and have greater energy throughout the day.

In regards to your parents, keep trying to convince them and show them the importance and benefit of exercise to your success at school.

Never forget that at the end of the day, they are your parents and they want what they think is best for you. When you disagree with them, remain respectful and try and use your wisdom and compassion when explaining your side of things.

If you've done all you can to convince them yourself maybe a teacher, tutor or a mutual friend can speak to your parents about the benefits?

Have you utilised school sport, PE or the school gym? From what i know PE is usually compulsory for all students?

And if all else fails, you can also access exercise tapes and dvds that you can do at home whenever you have free time (maybe that will be easier on your parents).

Good Luck with your studies and Inshallah Allah will bless you with success at the end of the year.

Salams,
