Salamz

Im currently doing a Research Project on "Sleep Deprivation" for school.

The Aim of my research is "To investigate the effects and reasons for sleep deprivation on a young person's well-being" (aged 13-23 yrs of age)

My Hypothesis is: "Lack of sleep is having a major impact on the well-being of young people (aged 13-23 yrs of age)".

So, Ive got to prove my Hypothesis and to do that I need information on why young people are sleep deprivated (the reasons) and as a result, how it is effecting them.

So just thought that i'd post this up here and wait for a reply from one of the counsellors :] inshAllah.

I hope I was clear in what I tryed to explain and inshAllah ya'll can try to provide info. for me and help!

Thank you so much and Jazakom Allah Khayr.

In the short run it may not affect but in the long run it definatly does.. It affects their moods, their strength, their ability to function properlyduring the day, they become short tempered...etc etc

esp when people suffer from insomina and cant get to sleep..it becomes an issue bro.

EG. I wanna go to bed and sleep but to cause there is so much rubbish going on in my life I just cant sleep ! the mind never stops ticking long enough to fall asleep... and the ticking is loud too !

Hence why I am on SMY @ 2.40am...while the majority of Sydney are already /bed

We've had a few interesting discussions on this in the past. What is the cause of lack of sleep and what are its effects? Obviously we haven't assessed this from any experimental or analytical point of view, but there've been many a interesting points raised.

Without delving into the detail, just want to say that I for one have definitely had more sleepless nights due to worries than due to school or university assessments.

Sis UP, whats the "long term" that we are talking about that it takes for this to take its toll on the person? Whats the timeframe we are looking at in other words?

Wassalam

Expired
19-11-08, 01:45 PM
I guess it depends on the person... some people it could only take a few nights while others it may take weeks or even months.... See the first couple of nights of not sleeping can seem exciting filling in the void online etc.. but after a few days/weeks again depending on the person it becomes a very lonely time where the mind begins to boggle and thoughts come up etc... then one may find they are fighting off the whispers of shaytan ..

I also think that it comes in stages... I could be fine for a few weeks or months then something will happen and it all starts over again.. but its the starting over again that takes the biggest toll. Cause te body then becomes used to something n it is a shock to the system, and you may feel ok at the time but then it hits hard... sometimes leading one to not be able to get up during the day.. wanting to shut the world out and nothing becomes important anymore..

I kinda took tis further than I was going to so I hope someone can make some sort of sense out of it ... is working on 2hrs sleep.

If so, i would be more than willing to put forward my firsthand experiences.

Yesterday I asked my teacher if I could ''interview'' you individually and she said yes, and that it would be another primary source (including my survey).. So inshAllah i'l get some questions ready to ask you, but bro would you want me to ask you them publicly or privately ? Oh and btw, thank you so much for willing to help.

In addition, i'd like to say that I have finished constructiong my questionnaire, inshAllah soon I will paste it up for ya'll to complete inshAllah (if ya'll wish to).. Just wondering, questions to the admins, where should I paste it up, in this thread? or some other one?

Well, in regards to the questionnaire, I was actualy supposed to try and get at least one questionnaire from each age group (13,14,15,16 up to 23 yrs of age).. Hala I have from the ages of 13 to 19. But I dont have any done by a 20,21,22 and 23 yr old.. And sis, PLEASE explicity mention the sunnah of rasul Allah pbuh in it .. i know your the type who would slide it in. The things in it is absolutely amazing. Man all my essays, assignments etc have some sort of islamic message etc to the teacher/marker alh. Eg. My mathematics uni research assignment "Do you know your purpose in life?" which got full marks.. then an essay on social perspectives & education - touching up the capitalist as opposed to the islamic system - lol the tutor (known as teachers at uni) made sure she discussed the issue further after class, totally made her think. sA

^ yiy lol sis why wouldn't someone want to sleep. If it wasnt for sleep, we would literally not be able to function properly  .. Just abit of of info. for you sis about "insomnia" that i've typed up for you down below:

What is insomnia? Insomnia is the term used to describe inadequate or poor quality of sleep, which may be due to one or more of the following: difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, waking up too early in the morning and being unable to get back to sleep, and unrefreshing sleep.

How does insomnia affect daytime functioning? Insomnia results in unrefreshing sleep and can lead to daytime problems of tiredness, lack of energy, difficulty in concentrating, and irritability.

Are there different types of insomnia? Periods of sleep dificulty lasting between one night and a few week are referred to as acute (transient) insomnia. Chronic insomnia refers to sleep difficulty during at least 3 night a week for 1 month or more.

What causes insomnia? Insomnia is nearly always related to a medical, pyschiatric, ciracdian, sleep, behavioural, lifestyle or environmental disorder. Acute insomnia is closely related to a major life event, such as pregnancy, significance stress at work, or bereavement. Once the event loses its intensity, the insomnia should also lessen.

What are the consequences of insomnia? Insomnia can result in excessive sleepness during the day, which can impact on activities such as driving and the operation of machinery, as well as decreased concentration and ability to learn. Other consequences can related to mood. Many people with ongoing insomnia problems become depressed or generally agitated. Insomnia can also worsen an underlying medical condition.

And sis, PLEASE explicity mention the sunnah of rasul Allah pbuh in it .. i know your the type who would slide it in.

My dad too... he falls asleep at the wrong times...

He once fell asleep wen he was driving the car and then there was this dude driving home with his brand new car he bought like 1/2 an hour before and my dad was in belmore nd he smashed into the dude's car a couple of times, but he didn't feel nothing and then wen the front of the car was fully smashed, he got up...

another time he fell asleep in the car wen he was driving, he was gonna hit this other car head on, and about 3 seconds before he did, he woke up... luckily he had enough time to move out of the way...

Mite be hard the first few days, but eventually if you're going to be starting that early everyday you have tafe (without sleep in the afternoon), your body should eventually start shutting down a lot earlier than 3:00 am.

Leave tablets as a later option, I personally don't like using tablets (prefer falling asleep ze normal way :) )

I have a few aromatic oils, just sniffing them made me relax. I think chamomile was one. Lavender is great too. It's good to put them on your bed.

A bit iffy with sleeping pills. Especially for us since we're quite young, and often lead to dependancy.

I tried to not sleep at all after Fajr, and stay awake the whole day, and it left me asleep on the couch at 9pm. Which is amazing for me, since it takes me at least and hour to fall asleep!

KhashKhash – Poppies

They cause intoxication and sleep

Rihan – Sweet Basil

Its aroma strengthens the heart. A sprinkle of basil in water induces sleep.

Nufar – Water Lily

The water lily induces sleep and sooths headaches. Sniffing it excessively makes the brain drowsy.

A clean, airy bedroom and clean bed. The cloths in which you sleep must also be loose and should not constrict any part of the body.

Compose yourself for sleep. Get rid of all the worries about what you have done during the day or propose to do the next day.

Stop thinking about anything but sleep half an hour before you get into bed.

Do not use heavily spiced food, meat or liquor.

Chamomile is well reputed to have a sedative and calming action.

Hops reduce irritability and restlessness.
