I've heard hair extensions are haram. Is this true? I don't understand how it can be haram when no one but urslef and family are going to see it...

Assalamu Alaykum,

Hair extensions are haram. The reason of impermissibility has nothing to do with non-mahrams seeing your hair.

It is impermissible to use real hair for the purpose of extending your own hair. This is because the body of a human being is sacred and cannot be used/consumed by another human being.

Using hair that is not from a human i.e sythetic or animal hair for the purpose of a wig or extension is permissible however.

In essence, it is haram to have hair extensions that are made from the hair of another human being. If the extension is not from a human, it is permissible.
