The Character of Muhammad

The Character of a Muslim is the character of the man who Allah sent as a mercy to all of mankind.

The Prophet Muhammad as Allah mentions in the Qur’an.

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad ) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes for (the meeting with) Allah and the last day, and remembers Allah much.
(Surah 33. Al-Ahzab, Verse 21)

And Verily, You (O Muhammad ) are on an exalted (standard of) character.
(Surah 68. Al-Qalam, Verse 04)

Sa’d bin Hisham asked A’ishah about the character of the Messenger of Allah , so she replied: ‘Have you not read the Qur’an?’ Sa’d said: ‘Of course.’
Then she (A’ishah) said: ‘Verily the character of the Messenger of Allah was the Qur’an.
(Sahih Muslim 1:513)

This means that he would act according to the commands and the prohibition in the Qur’an.
His nature and character were patterned accord to the Qur’an and he abandoned his natural disposition (i.e., the carnal nature). So whatever the Qur’an commanded, he did it, and whatever it forbade he avoided it. Along with this, Allah gave him the exalted character, which included the qualities of modesty, kindness, bravery, pardoning, gentleness and every other good characteristic.

The Messenger of Allah said: “I have only been sent to perfect righteous behavior.” (Ahmad 2:381)

The Prophet said: The most perfect believer in respect of faith is he who is best of them in manners. (Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 4665)

When the Prophet Muhammad was asked as to who amongst the slaves of Allah are dearest to him, the Prophet replied “one who has the best moral character.”

Anas said: “I served the Messenger of Allah for ten years, and he never said a word of displeasure to me (uff), nor did he ever say to me concerning something I had done: ‘Why did you do that?’ And he never said to me concerning something I had not done: ‘Why didn’t you do this?’ He had the best character, and I never touched any silk or anything else that was softer than the palm of the Messenger of Allah .
And I never smelled any musk or perfume that had a better fragrance than the sweat of the Messenger of Allah . (Sahih Muslim 4:1814)

Anas also commented “The Prophet never used to draw his hand from the other person’s hands till the latter drew away his hands, and he never used to turn away his face from that person till the latter himself turned his face away.”

Al-Bara’ said: “The Messenger of Allah had the most handsome face of all the people, and he had the best behavior of all the people. And he was not tall, nor was he short”
(Imam Al-Bukhari, Fath Al-Bari 6:652)

Abu Hurayrah said, "I have not seen anything more beautiful than the Messenger of Allah .
It was as if the sun was shining in his face. When he laughed, it reflected from the wall."
Ali described the Prophet Muhammad , he said, "He was the most generous of people, the most truthful, the most naturally lenient and the most generous with his company."

The Prophet Muhammad was also described as being:

• Decent, humble and soft-hearted
• Quarrelling was not his habit
• If he was upset he showed his displeasure through his silence
• He never spoke obscene words
• Whenever he looked at his companions, he smiled
• He treated his relatives kindly, but did not give them preference over better persons
• He rejected having people stand up for him, and said “I am a slave of Allah; I eat as other people eat, and I sit as other people sit.”
• He encouraged the virtue of personal hygiene as the following Hadith states:

Narrated by Aisha
The Messenger of Allah said: Ten are the acts according to Fit rah (natural state):
1. clipping the moustache,
2. letting the beard grow,
3. using the tooth-stick,
4. snuffing up water in the nose,
5. cutting the nails,
6. washing the finger joints,
7. plucking the hair under the armpits,
8. shaving the pubes,
9. And cleaning one's private parts with water.
10. The narrator said: I have forgotten the tenth, but it may have been rinsing the mouth. (Sahih Muslim Hadith 502)

• He liked fragrances (perfume)
• He encouraged the act of brushing ones teeth
• He disliked food which would leave an unpleasant odour (smell)

Even the enemies of the Prophet Muhammad admired his character, and could find no fault with his personality.

The Prophet’s neighbour was a disbeliever who would ritually (constantly) clutter the prophet’s doorway with her rubbish , yet when she fell ill, he raced to comfort her in her illness, which moved her heart and caused her to embrace Islam.

After his death he left a legacy, a Sunnah, a path for us worthy of being followed, Ask yourself are following it?
